Eid Card for your Neighbor [FREE]

Its days are the  best of days and its hours are the best of hours. The Holy month of Ramadan is departing us. The bitterness is calmed through the celebration of Eid-ul-fitr, the first of Shawaal. While we generally give gifts and love to family and friends, this year, we ask you to think about somebody else -- your neighbor. The month of Ramadan has been challenging for Muslims around the world. In the midst of this, research for the Pew Research Forum indicates that many of our neighbors have negative feelings towards Muslims. We believe that there is an easy fix to this problem: love your neighbor. Allah communicates in the Holy Qur'an, “And (be good) to the neighbor who is your relative and to the neighbor who is not a relative" (4:36). In fact, as Muslims we have a religious obligation to assist our neighbors as the Prophet (SAW) mentions, "That...

Teach your kids about #Gaza. Now.

From the ash-covered streets of Gaza, to the smoldering walls of Iraq, to the hollow mosques of China, the month of Ramadan has been challenging. The screams from Gaza, however, penetrate deeper, because of the role that we – as Westerners – play, through our government. While no shortage of scholarly and journalistic articles have been published regarding this issue, there is a lack of articles focused on a specific demographic: kids. What do we tell our kids? Our discussion is in four parts: (a) a rationale for telling children about Gaza, (b) a historical narrative to teach, (c) key topics to discuss, and (d) immediate action items.Tell Your Kids about GazaThe foremost question a parent should ask him or herself is, “Why should I tell my child about Gaza?” There are three primary reasons to share this narrative with your children:(a) Forbidding EvilWhether on the playground at the hands of a bully...

Muslims are diverse. So is our food! #NoorKidsIftar

While the spiritual aspects of Ramadan can be challenging for children to grasp, food is something kids can touch and feel. As a result there are a many lessons that we can teach kids about Ramadan through food. One of which, is the diversity within Islam. Muslims are not Egyptian, Pakistani, Nigerian, black or white. In fact, they are ALL of the above! But, while we may be different in our ethnic heritage, we all come together to worship Allah (SWT). Diversity is an important aspect of Muslim culture, and what better way to demonstrate this concept than food!    #NoorKidsIftar We will be compiling kid-friendly recipes from around the world that you can make with your children. In doing so, you'll be able to spend quality time with children, while teaching an important lesson on Islamic diversity!  How it works: + Post your kid-friendly dishes on Instagram between...

Food for thought this Ramadan (for your kids)

by Ali Daya, Research Associate, Noor Kids   Iftaar=Futoor, Sehri=Suhoor. Call it what you like, it’s food for all. Eating, or, specific to the month of Ramadan, the breaking of the fast, is universal. Food is an important theme of this Holy month. And, as parents, an important source of teaching. Below are four of the most important lessons we should be taking away from food.  1. After difficulty, there comes ease.   The breaking of the fast is a beautiful concept in its own right. After a (long) day of exercising restraint... of pushing our body and soul to its limit... we feel a comfort when it is time to break our fast. As obvious as it is, sometimes we forget to meditate on this: fasting is a test. It is a challenge. It is not meant to be easy.  But once the sun does set, we claim victory. Our...

3 Habits you NEED to adopt over Ramadan

“We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence then, is not an act, but a habit.” -Aristotle Ramadan is to Muslims what New Years is to non-Muslims; we create resolutions to improve ourselves. However, unlike New Years, Ramadan is an entire month to turn those resolutions into habits. Many Muslims, myself included, make honorable and lofty goals that subhanallah sound great. Unfortunately, the majority of us fail to adopt these resolutions. Let's not make that mistake this year. This Ramadan, we should develop habits that last. Research indicates that we should: (a) develop macro goals and (b) micro quotas to achieve those goals. Macro goals, essentially, are our priorities. Micro quotas are the activities we must do on a daily basis to achieve those goals. So, for example, this year, if our priority is to develop lasting Islamic traditions with children, then we should develop specific activities to complete on a daily basis to achieve this goal. Having...

3 Simple Ways to Open Dialogue with Kids

Written by Chaplain Zain Syed   Life is busy and most of the time many of us feel like we are holding on to too many ropes to manage. The world we live in is one that requires us to feel like we must “have it all” and encourages us to “multi-task” to various degrees. How does this affect our families and how we raise them? When I taught in Indonesia many students used to come to me with problems ranging  from relationship issues to bullying to teen anxiety. Most of these should have been presented to parents; but, they came to me. After counselling the students, I would frequently hear students comment, "My parents don't take the time to listen to me like you do." I would try to explain to students that their parents were busy supporting them and their future. But, the students would appropriately question, “So their...

An update and apology from Noor Kids

As Salaam Alaikum Wa Rahmatullah, Since the very beginning, we’ve introduced you to intimate areas of our lives, such as when Mohammed graduated and when I got married. Over the last year, we’ve also shared our family’s battle with cancer. In this update, I wish to update you on our experiences, apologize for our shortcomings, and set expectations for the weeks to come. The last year has been a rollercoaster. March 6, 2013. On that day, I gained admission at Berkeley, Noor Kids Discover Patience was printed, and our family discovered that mom had cancer. Dr. Kubiak said we had a few short months. Our world was rocked. We pushed on the brakes in our professional lives, and instead focused on family. Mohammed and I moved home with mom and dad. We began to recite the Qu’ran with contemplation. We participated in nightly heartfelt conversations with God. Mohammed and I completed half of our deen through marriage. We went on...

We need to ask your help... this time... for mom

Your support has allowed us to achieve incredible things. Today, we need to ask for help again... this time... for mom. In 50 years, my mom never received an award for her career. Because, as a stay at home mom, she sacrificed her career for us. She never wore high fashion clothes. Because, as a working-class family, she saved all of her money for us. She never complained about her situations in life. Because, as a compassionate mom, she never wanted to stress us. At 25, I finally realize that she gave the world, for me. Now, I want to be her award. I want my character to decorate her like beautiful clothes. I want to be the source that relieves her stress. Mom has cancer. A tough, tough form. We've been battling for a while, and alhumdulillah, Allah (SWT) has granted us with many blessings since her diagnosis. Tomorrow is...

Schools, Bookstores, and Resellers: Noor Kids Go To Hajj

Tawaaf, Sa’iee, and Mount Hira… what do they all have in common? They are all up for investigation, in  “Noor Kids go to Hajj!” The book is developed for 4-8 year olds.   The concept s of Hajj were created through the wisdom of Allah (SWT). As such, while the ideas can be simple, the reflections on these acts of worship lead to incredible growth – for children, but also their parents. We developed our stories such that those who reflect on them, young or old, may be able to take away exceptional learnings to apply into our everyday activities.   As we think about our daily lives, what are our daily goals and purpose? Do they center on our friends and playtime? Or maybe work? However, as we walk around the Holy Kaaba, Allah (SWT) forces us to create a convincing message, one in which his worship...

Did you know basketball was invented over 120 years ago? At that time, they didn't use "hoops" like we do today. They actually used peach baskets, so each time a team scored, the referee had to climb a ladder to get the ball back out! Want to see how many times you can score? Check out the new game I found!

Our History: 5 words that changed our lives forever

The door squeaked on my old silver Honda as Mohammed quickly opened the door. He said with a smile, "I've got an idea."   Mohammed is my older brother. I may not always be quick to admit it, but simply calling him my brother is an injustice to who he really is. He's my best friend, mentor, and inspiration. He was the first from our small community in Minneapolis to venture out into the 'big city.' Every once in a while, I'll hear whispers from others about how he has turned into a household name within 'prestigious circles' ... you know, the type of circles that discuss "strategic organizational synergies," "holistic margin management," "collaborative communicational bench marking," and stuff like that. What do they even mean? I don't know, but I'll bet my brother can tell you.   "Let's do something worth doing," he said.   I looked at him in anticipation. I knew he was...

    Our Mission and Philosophy

We're looking to brighten the lives of little Muslims - and right now, we are doing that through activity books. Noor Kids develops 28-page, professionally designed activity books that are made specifically for little Muslims growing up in North America. Our books are published quarterly... so lets do the math... we publish 4 books per year :-).   Content Philosophy At Noor Kids, parents often ask us if we have a strategy around our content. For us, it's vitally important that our content supports our mission to promote Islamic education, Muslim culture and American integration:   Islamic education: Communicate Islamic values and fundamentals through the use of critical thought. We believe that there are a host of resources that discuss the "what" and the "how" of religion (i.e. What is Salaat and how do I perform it? What is Tawaaf and how do I perform it?); however, our books are...

    Fun Facts with Asad!

I learned a really cool fact at school today! Did you know that the first computers were as big as a whole room!  Can you imagine trying to use a computer that big?  Not many people had them.  In the beginning, only the government used them, and they could do a lot less than even a cell phone can today! The first computers had almost no memory… so you couldn’t even save one picture on them!  They used things called “vacuum tubes” to store information, and they had to use a lot of them. ENIAC, one of the first computers, had 17,468 of these vacuum tubes.  There's a picture of some of them on the right. No wonder the computers were so big! This is a US Army photo showing part of ENIAC, one of the first computers. It's so big!

    Amira's favorite foods!

I ate some cereal for breakfast today, and you know what was my favorite part? All the yummy raisins that were inside. They're so sweet and juicy! Raisins are dried up grapes, and the word "raisin" is a French word that means "grapes." Raisins were discovered accidentally when some grapes that were still on the vine dried up in the hot sun. (I'm glad they did!) Raisins are also a very good for you and can give you lots of energy because they have natural sugars inside. That's why I like eating them when I'm playing outside and get hungry for a snack.  Yummy!   Did you know that carrots used to be purple?  And they come from Afghanistan!  I love eating carrots in my salad because they are so crunchy and sweet.  They are really good for you too.  Carrots have all kinds of nutrients in them that give...

Let's all say thanks! Noor Kids Discover their Blessings, has arrived.

At a point in time when we find ourselves asking for more… a bigger car, larger home, or better salaries, our newest title, "Noor Kids Discover their Blessings," seeks to ground ourselves in the philosophy of gratitude. In an environment when many are challenged due to the woes of high unemployment, rising healthcare costs, and increasing prices for household items like food and gasoline, understanding the philosophy of gratitude is of deep importance. In Arabic, the term for gratitude, Shuk’r, is often thought of as the antonym (or opposite) of the term for a non-believer, Kufr. In effect, this relationship infers that to have gratitude is to believe.  In order for one to be thankful, it requires: (a) recognition of our blessings, and (b) belief that these blessings come an entity greater than ourselves. In effect, this process grounds ourselves in ‘what really matters’ and establishes our faith in Allah (SWT). The first...

Tawaaf, Sa'iee, & Mount Hira? “Noor Kids go to Hajj,” is finally here!

Tawaaf, Sa’iee, and Mount Hira… what do they all have in common? They are all up for investigation, in our second book, “Noor Kids go to Hajj!” We’re excited to announce that Noor Kids will be donating $5 towards Qurbani (food for the poor) for all subscriptions, between Wednesday, November 2nd and Eid al-Adha! In building compelling children’s books, iteration is key. This time around was no different. Simplifying complex ideas, like Tawaaf and Sa’iee, and communicating these elements of Hajj in a way that children can relate to, was our primary goal in “Noor Kids go to Hajj!” However, this wasn’t our only goal. The concepts of Hajj were created through the wisdom of Allah (SWT). As such, while the ideas can be simple, the reflections on these acts of worship lead to incredible growth – for children, but also their parents. We developed our stories such that those who reflect on...

Noor Kids Testimonials: Enthusiastic, Appreciative & Eager!

Alhumdulillah -  All praise be to God Eight weeks ago, Noor Kids released its first book, ‘School is Out for the Summer’. With no experience in professional writing or publishing, Mohammed and I realized that a generation of little Muslims in North America were missing a vital component in literature – a sense of belonging. As our second issue hits the press, we reflect on feedback that we received with an incredible sense of appreciation. All praise is certainly due to God, it is due to his blessings that Noor Kids has amounted to what it is today. We are fortunate to be in his graces and commit to continue pursuing our mission in his sake. While we still have a long way to go, we are enthusiastic about the strong initial support we have received – in the first six weeks alone, we were able to put Noor Kids...

I am a Muslim because of September 11th

I am a Muslim because of September 11thAmin G. Aaser, Co-founder & Author of Noor Kids Ms. Drugge, my 8th grade math teacher, was explaining that the model we were dissecting was called a parabola . In an instant, our Vice Principal ran into the room and exclaimed that our country was under attack.  Little did I know that this September 11th morning would define the rest of my life. In the wake of the attacks, my feelings of anxiety and concern soon turned into intense nationalism and pride. Aspirations for Harvard and Stanford took a back seat as I looked up the entrance requirements for West Point; I wanted to be a part of the solution. An American flag was placed alongside my Jerry Rice, Cris Carter, and Michael Jordan posters. I could not sit on the sidelines as my country was attacked. I soon realized, however, that my nation...

Ramadan Reflection: Noor Kids Giving $5/order for Famine Relief

"He who hears the call for help from another Muslim but does not respond to him, has nothing to do with Islam." - Prophet Mohammed (SWT) 500,000 children are currently malnourished and risk death at the hands of the famine that has struck East Africa. Today, over 12 million people are in immediate need of food and water.  Witnesses have accounted children feeding from their mothers who have already passed away. Every day, hundreds die because of the drought and famine. This is the worst humanitarian crisis in the world today. The beautiful month of Ramadan nears it's final days. As a I reflect on the weeks of abstaining from food and water from sun up to sun down, I recall the exceptional feeling of breaking my fast. A days worth of hard work, witnessing my peers and colleagues at work breaking for lunch and enjoying cold beverages throughout the day with a smile....

    What are your Ramadan Goals?

It's amazing how quickly Ramadan passes by each year. In no time, I will go from counting down how many days of fasting are left, to wishing I could have just a few extra days. Making the most of Ramadan is something that I've always had a challenge with, because I feel like I just scratch the surface on personal and spiritual development. It's so easy to just "fast" but I think we have an opportunity to take it further. This Ramadan, I hope that I can do Ibadat throughout the day by focusing 100% on balancing and achieving a few goals: 1) Spend time with my family. I have a number of family members in town since my sister will be delivering soon, inshaAllah. I will be heading to the hospital tonight, and hopefully be meeting a new member of the family. Also, I feel like there is never...

    Noor Kids at ISNA 2011

Both Amin and I visited the Islamic Society of North America conference last week during the fourth of July weekend. It was extremely exciting and busy. We left Minneapolis Thursday morning so we could make it in time for booth setup on Friday morning. The drive is about 7 to 8 hours from Minneapolis to Chicago. On our way, we picked up freshly printed books from our printers - EBA printing - in Milwaukee. The EBA team has been great so far, they gave us a good price and we love that they are close to our home. Not only that, but the team did an exceptional job on the print and had a very fast turn around time! We arrived into Chicago near 8pm, and went for dinner with our friend Maryam Eskandari. Maryam is an architect and recent graduate from Harvard/MIT and was presenting at ISNA about her research on...

Harvard supports the Noor Kids Story!

The Noor Kids story started in December 2010 when Mohammed and I reflected on the challenges we've faced growing up as a Muslim in the United States. If you recall, headlines last December were overflowing with negative messages towards Muslims due to plans to build a mosque in New York City. During the discussion, our older sister, Shireen, proudly announced that insha’Allah we would soon become uncles as she would be delivering a child! In the excitement, we concluded that while our experience as Muslims growing up in the United States was challenging, it would certainly be more difficult for Muslim children to grow up in the current environment. At that point, we decided that it was our responsibility, as capable and motivated Muslim-Americans, to play a role in brightening the picture of little Muslims in North America! We quickly started looking into a host of solutions and realized that Noor Kids has...
